Inside Look: Lorne Lubin
Posted: 3/10/2010

Lorne Lubin creates one of a kind leather goods and jewelry that has been featured at Fashion in Detroit, Detroit Fashion Week, a Fruit of the Loom commercial... to name a few.  Its time to meet the designer...

What is your educational background?

I am currently working on a degree in Graphic Design from Eastern Michigan University. I was also an art student at Santa Monica College in California, studying Jewelry design/metalsmithing, airbrush, sculpture, painting, Apparel construction, patternmaking, printmaking and music. I guess you can say I am a jack of all trades when it comes to art.

Describe your fashion career.

I began my professional fashion career as an apprentice to Calvin Durham, who designed clothing back in the 60's and 70's for many of the most legendary rock stars and musicians in history, including: The Rolling Stones, Parliament Funkadelic, Rick James, Miles Davis, ...to name a few. During my apprenticeship, after I became advanced enough as a designer, I had the privilege of designing leather apparel and Jewelry for the World Renowned "Billy Martin's" Boutique in Sunset Plaza in the heart of Hollywood, California. My items have been purchased by some of Hollywood's most notorious celebrities who frequented the Billy Martin's boutique.

What best describes your work?

I would definitely describe my work as unique and eclectic, but I have the ability to adapt well to current styles.  I have always followed my own instincts when it comes to my work. I pride myself in creating one-of-a-kind pieces that are visually pleasing, well designed, and well made. Every piece I create is handmade, therefore having that "human touch", that is impossible to achieve with the use of factory machines.

What is your design process?

My design process starts with an inspiration.  These designs or ideas come to me while I am having a cigarette, drinking a beer, or while I am doing pretty much just about anything other than trying to let the logical half of my brain dictate my design.   Next, is turning on some music, and making sure that my workstation is clean.  From then on, I simply play each step by ear, experimenting with many different variations on one design until I come up with the winner. I then create the item by hand, and scrutinize it thoroughly to make sure the item is perfect according to my standards. This is a very long process sometimes, because my standards are so high, that I often spend days analyzing the final product, until the moment that it is in the hands of the customer.

What inspires you?

My biggest inspiration in my work is my subconscious. I don't mean this in a pretentious way. By this, I mean that many of my designs and ideas come to me when I am in a relaxed state of mind, and not trying too hard to come up with a design. I just like to let my imagination run wild, and try not to limit myself to any specific style or theme. I use my knowledge and experience as my tour guides, and let my creativity do the rest.

Who is your style icon?

I have so many style icons.. most of them are musicians from the 60's and 70's, even 80's:   David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Chaka Khan, Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Page, Betsey Johnson, Calvin Durham, Calvin Klein, Henry Duarte..etc. Really hope I'm not missing anyone!!

Who would you most like to dress?

I would love to design items for: Aerosmith, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Slash, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy Lee, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce, Prince, Jessica Biel, Heather Graham, and Cindy Crawford.  I want my designs to reach as many people as possible.

Why Detroit?  Why now?

Detroit is such a great and booming city with such a rich history. I am proud of the fact that I grew up in a city that spawned so many talented musicians, actors, models, directors and inventions. Now is the best time for people to buy Detroit made products.  With a growing movie industry in Detroit, Detroit could one day be the next New York City or Los Angeles as far as fashion is concerned.

What can we expect to see from you in the next 5 years?

You can expect to see a lot from me in the next 5 years. I am currently working on a full line of Jewelry as well as my leather apparel, but I am also very interested in designing, and inventing multifunctional fashion accessories. I am also a working musician, so in the next 5 years I hope to be very active in all of my creative endeavors.
