Is Your Hair Style Holding You Back?
Posted: 7/20/2010

Harsh fact: Perception is reality and your choice of hairstyle may be limiting your opportunities in the workplace…

In 2005, during my “I am fabulous, hear me roar” phase, I tried out almost every ‘it’ hairstyle!  I went from a short-and-sassy Nia Long cut to a full-blown blonde Beyonce weave---all in less than 12 months!  Although I gained a lot of attention at my job for having the ‘coolest’ hair, it could have impacted my career advancement.  Was the attention worth it?

Learn from my co$tly mistakes and ask yourself the following questions to ensure you are achieving a healthy hair image:

#1: Am I familiar with the company’s policy on grooming, paying special attention to the ‘hair’ section?

If there are no clear rules, be proactive and speak with your direct manager or the Human Resource department about the policies.

#2: Does my hairstyle fit the overall culture of the organization?

If the company is conservative, maintain a more polished look.  If the company is creative, choose edgier looks.  If your organization thrives off of innovation-get rid of the jerry curl…

#3: Do people spend more time discussing my hair color than they do my presentation?

We all love compliments but they should never come at the cost of your career advancement.  When your name comes up during conversations, it should be associated with positive performance-related issues.

#4: Does this look make me feel comfortable and confident?

Your hair style should always enhance your look, causing you to project a more confident self-image.

#5: Does this look work with or go against my long-term professional goals?
